Running After Hysterectomy 8-week post op

January 9, 2019

Today marks my 8-week post op.

I am feeling pretty good.  I’m finally actually feeling like I didn’t even have surgery.  I definitely feel 100% better than I did before surgery.  I have not had any spotting or any kind of discharge for a couple weeks now.  Now and then I get little twinges or slight cramping, but that could be due to gas or something else.  I haven’t had any real pain at all.  My sex life is better than before, because it no longer feels like I’m getting punched in my insides.   My swelly belly seems to be going away or at least not as noticeable.
I increased my running to 4 miles at a time non-stop and feel great when I’m finished.  I still run at a nice easy pace around 10-10:30 min mile pace. This weekend I am going to try for 5 miles.  I made myself a goal for January to walk, run or bike at least 1 mile a day & do at least 10,000 steps a day.  So far so good.  On Sunday I ran 3 miles, biked 4 miles and walked 1 mile with no problems at all.  I am working my way to hopefully be able to complete my challenge race on Feb.2nd.  We shall see.....

Running after Hysterectomy & more 7 weeks Post -Op

Yesterday January 1, 2019 I ran 3 miles non-stop for the 1st time since my surgery.  1 day before my 7th week post op mark.  It felt great!!  I told my husband that I was going to try a mile and go from there.  I ended up being able to run the full 3 miles.  I stayed at a slow easy pace averaging 10:41 mins. per mile.  I didn’t have any issues afterwards.  I’m hoping if I can get at least a mile in everyday this month, I will be ready for my race challenge on February 2nd.  I’m going to leave my weekends for my longer runs.  I may try 3.5 miles or maybe even 4 miles this weekend, and increase it each week, to slowly get back to where I was.  May take a while before I get back to the pace I was before, but that’s ok, I’m just happy to be running again!!

With doing this blog, I just want reassure women who are concerned they may never be able to run again after a hysterectomy (like I was scared to death of), that you CAN!  You just have to take it slow and listen to your body.  Also, always listen to your doctor.  Every woman is different, it may take you a little longer or you may even be able to start before I did.  But, whenever the time is right for you, I hope by my experience, it will help you have more confidence & relief knowing that you will get there again!  Don’t ever give up!

Okay on another note – I told you all I would let you know how it goes.  So here it is…me and my husband ended up having intercourse for the first time since surgery on New Year’s EVE (6 weeks & 5 days post-op).  Yes, we ended the year with a BANG – literally lol.  I was nervous that it was going to hurt and we took it slow.  But, thankfully it didn’t hurt at all and it was amazing!  I didn’t have any pain during or afterwards and I also did not have any spotting.   So far, my biggest fears I had going into having the hysterectomy have been proven wrong and I am doing better and feel better than ever before!

I hope my blog helps even just one woman who is about to go through a hysterectomy or maybe is still in recovery.   Because, I know I looked everywhere trying to find answers, especially on running.  There isn’t much out there for women who run and what to expect after a hysterectomy that’s for sure.

I will continue to update from time to time.  But, please feel free to ask me any questions you may have and I’ll do my best to answer them.
